Funeral services for Dr. Luther Goodrich Jones. 95. of College Station will be held 2 p.m. Monday at A&M Presbyterian Church., Officiating will be the Revs, Tom Bates and Jack Harrison of A&M Presbyterian. There will be a private interment In the College Station City Cemetery. The body will lie in state today from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Jones died Friday in a local hospital
Jones was a professor emeritus of soil and crop sciences at Texas A&M University. Born In Temple Jones graduated from Princeton University in 1917. He served in the U.S. Army in France during World War l. He came to A&M in 1920 and coached the first conference wrestling team. He received his master's degree from A&M in 1921. He then transferred to Cornell University in New York and obtained a doctorate degree,
Jones returned to A&M in 1926 where he serve as a agronomy professor. He served on the first College.Station city council in 1937 and on the board of trustees for the College Station Independent School District In 1946. He helped form the College Station State Bank, now University National, and served as its first president. He retired from teaching in 1952.
He was active In the Boy Scouts, and the College Station Recreation Council. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of College Station and the William J. Bryan, Chapter No. 14. Sons of the Republic of Texas, and a long time elder at the A&M Presbyterian Church.
Jones was a 70-year member of the Sul Ross Lodge No. 1300. A.F. and A.M. He was a member of the Ivanhoe Commandery. No. 8 and Knights Templar. He was an organizer and life-member of the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center, a former director of the Texas Society for Crippled Children and a honorary life member of the Brazos County Easter Seal Society.
He is preceded In death by his wife Catherine Panton Jones.
Survivors Include ........ Memorials may be made to the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center at 1318 Memorial Drive. Bryan 77802. or the Luther Goodrich Jones Agronomy Scholarship fund at Texas A&M.
