    Biography:
Essex Standard Friday 01 December 1876
SATURDAY; Frank Gayfer, 19, a labourer, was charged with having wounded Maria Flory, with intent to do her grievous bodily harm. Mr. Wrenfordsley appeared for the prosecution; the prisoner was undefended by counsel. The prisoner, who lived in Ipswich, was in February last married to the daughter of prosecutrix. The appeared to have lived unhappily together, and on the 25th of Sept. they separated, the wife returning to her mothers home. The evidence went to show that on the night of the 26th of Sept.. Mrs. Flory was aroused by violent knocking at her street door, and by the prisoner in a loud voice demanding admission to the house. She refused to open the door, upon which the prisoner burst it open. The prisoner's manner was very threatening, his language was violent and offensive, and he repeatedly exclaimed that where his wife was he would be. Mrs. Flory cried out "Murder," and two of her neighbours came to her assistance. She then appeared to have taken up the poker, but did not strike the prisoner. Upon that the prisoner took from under his arm a loaded staff, with which he struck her a violent blow on the left side of the head. She was rendered insensible, and was covered with blood. The surgeon who was called in to see her stated that he found her "deluged with blood from the head, and that she was bleeding so profusely that he immediately bandaged the head without making a minute examinations of the wound. For a month she was unable to leave her bed, and for sometime her life was in danger. Upon the prisoner being searched by the police a large knife was found upon him. The Jury returned a verdict of Guilty, and his Lordship, who characterized the prisoner as "a very dangerous person," sentenced him to seven years penal servitude.
