- All of the births of the children come from the End Lane Baptist Chapel in Colchester. Sarah's and Samuel's birth was recorded in 1816; all the others were recorded in 1837. The same minister, George Francis, recorded them all. The records says that George, the first child, was born in Woodbridge in Suffolk. All the others are recorded as being born in the borough of Colchester, also noting the parish in Colchester. They also note Harriet's maiden name, Criswell, and her fathers name, James. By having the mothers maiden name it was easy to make the connection back to Grundisburgh where the marriage took place.
The two children that don't have a birth date are found in a monumental inscription found in the St Peter's parish churchyard. It notes the death of Harriet age 19, Joseph age 13, William age 20, and Sarah age 16. The inscription ties all the children together. Also next to them is an inscription for Samuel, the father, who died in 1833. A newspaper account notes that Samuel died as the result of an accident which which a tree fell off of a wagon. He was a successful wagon or coach maker. (wheelwright)
